The Stewartville School Board adopted a resolution granting a perpetual easement to the City of Stewartville for storm water drainage and retention control purposes in exchange for the city paving a bike path through the school property at their meeting on Monday, October 24.

Bill Schimmel, Stewartville City Administrator, presented the proposed retention pond and bike path to the board. In exchange for the storm water drainage control rain garden/retention easement, the city will install a pedestrian/bike trail connecting link between the new 2nd Avenue SW pedestrian/bike trail and the existing trail on school property.

“We have been working on this for the past year with meetings and presentation between both staffs on the proposed 2nd Avenue SW street project,” Schimmel said. He said that the construction company will not interfere with any school sports activities. “Thanks for working with the city in this process,” Schimmel said.

The board also approved two student trips. They approved the trip for ten juniors and seniors accompanied by two chaperones to the Business Professionals of America fall leadership conference in Minneapolis on October 30 and 31.

They also approved the eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C. Adam Eickhoff, a third grade teacher and trip organizer, said that with the board’s approval they would begin promoting the trip. They need to have thirty students sign up in order to book the trip. The cost will be approximately $1,000 per student. Eickhoff hopes to have a list of students by December. The trip is tentatively planned for June 10.

Pat Leonard, Stewartville District Services, shared the findings of the district’s 2010-2011 Annual Report with the board. Stewartville students achieved above state averages in MCA-II reading scores at all tested grade levels and in aggregate achieved a score of 81 percent. Math scores for students in third through eighth grades achieved a 69 percent proficient, 11 percent higher than the state average of 58 percent.

The next board meeting will be Monday, November 14 at 7 p.m. in the Racine City Hall.
