Viola to celebrate 137th annual Viola Gopher Count

Viola will kick off its annual Viola Gopher Count celebration dating back to 1874, on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. The food stand will be open for supper, with a variety of food entrées at 6 p.m. The Family Fun Night will also have inflatable and games starting at 5:30 p.m. and going to 9 p.m. The souvenir stand will be open at this time.

Registration for the popular 5K Run and Family Walk starts at 5 p.m. across from the Viola Town Hall. Folks may also register by visiting www.gophercount.com. Taking place on the trail, all proceeds from the Run/Walk go to the Eagles Cancer Telethon.

The local talent contest starts at 7 p.m. You must pre-register to enter the various categories. Info is on the web site. There will be fireworks at dusk (rain date Thursday). The souvenir stand located next to the Town Hall will have new design tee shirts, sweat shirts, hats and lawn chairs.

On Thursday, the grand parade is at 10 a.m., rain or shine. This year Viola Gopher Count welcomes Farmall/International Harvestor Tractors and Machinery as the featured tractor. The tractors will be on display following the parade. Contact Dale Bierbaum (272-0518) for parade info. Parade ribbons will be awarded following the parade. A special prize of a $100 will be given the winning family float.

Following the grand parade a soap box derby for boys and girls will take place on Thomas Street. A Gopher Gold Hunt will be held by the Park Stage with timed age categories. It is sponsored by Eastwood Bank and All American Coop. Inflatables and games will also be on hand.

The Viola Gopher Count Committee and Viola Volunteers will be serving up their traditional food at the food stand, including burgers, dogs, brats, pizza, great cheese curds, and a chicken plate and beverages for kids and adults. Over the noon hour, enjoy some great food while enjoying musical entertainment on the park stage, over the noon hour.

Early afternoon the crowning of the royalty will take place under the tent. A Viola Township couple will soon be announced and they will represent Viola in area parades this summer.

Only pre-school boys and girls may register at the Viola Town Hall at 12:30 p.m. for the Kiddie Parade at 1 p.m. Categories are decorated doll buggy, decorated coaster wagon or pets. The pre-school kiddie parade takes place on the Park Stage.

The Pie Eating Contest follows. It will feature chocolate cream pies. The pies are eaten in various age groups and speeds! The contest is a crowd pleaser, any age may participate.

Another traditional event following the pie eating contest is the Ladies Nail Driving Contest. Hammers and nails are provided. A small sports race event follows for the young folks.

Finale of Thursday’s events are a dance in the Viola Town Hall (7-11 p.m.) with music by Ryan Herman. The street dance under the BIG TOP will feature continuous music form 7:30 until 1 a.m. with music by Trouble Shooter and Standby, rain or shine.

If you are new to the area, you will find Viola on County Road #2, known as the Viola Road, about ten miles NE of Century High School. There will be a free shuttle service available sponsored by Beer Bellyz Bar and Grill and GPI.

Come and enjoy the many traditional events at the Viola Gopher Count.

The big family reunion, Viola Gopher Count is always held the 3rd Thursday in June.
