Dover looking at creative ways to attract a convenience store

The City of Dover has been looking for someone to build a convenience store in or near the city for a number of years. They have what they think is a perfect location between the city and I-90. The fact the city has three major highways nearby should be a positive factor. But, they have been unable to attract a builder because the number of houses in the city just isn’t large enough.
So, the Econcomic Development Association is evaluating the use of Dover’s portion of the Rochester Sales tax money to attract a convenience store operator. “We are looking at our options,” said Matt Elder, Director of the Dover EDA. “We know we need a convenience store but the large companies don’t want to build one because we don’t have enough roof tops.” Highway 14 runs north of the city, I-90 is just south of the city and County Road 10 runs through the city.
They feel the residents of Dover alone would be enough support to make the business successful with business from the highways offering additional customer base. “We are looking to work a deal and the end result is to get a convenience store,” Elder said. Elder said they could use the tax money to encourage more home building or to build a store and lease it. “Whether we get houses or not, a convenience store will not hurt us,” said Elder. The Dover City Council set the city wide garage sale for Saturday, May 11.
