The Volunteer Center at United Way of Olmsted County promotes community engagement by connecting individuals and groups in Southeastern Minnesota with rewarding volunteer opportunities. To help promote volunteerism, United Way of Olmsted County highlights a few opportunities each week. If you would like to receive this column or would like information on additional opportunities, contact United Way office at (507) 529-4831 or go to www.uwolmsted.org.

Reading tutors

As a reading tutor, you will work individually with students on reading basics at Jefferson or Riverside elementary schools. You will play a critical role in improving students’ sight word vocabulary, increasing students reading fluency by providing guidance and support, and reinforcing foundational reading skills. Call 328-4356 for more information or to volunteer with Rochester Public Schools.

Friendly visitor

Families or individuals generally spend an hour once per week visiting with a senior neighbor. These chats can be the highlight of a senior's week. Because of the flexibility of this program, it is a great opportunity for working people and for you or your family to help others. Male volunteers are especially needed. Call 285-5272 for more information or to volunteer with Elder Network.

World Festival volunteers

Celebrate your ethnicity by participating in the Annual Rochester World Festival to be held at John Marshall High School on April 13 and 14. We are looking for volunteers to represent their ethnic heritage by performing and/or engaging in children's activities, cultural displays, and food preparation for the World Festival on April 12 (performances) and April 13 (children's activities, displays, food etc.). Call 280-8319 for more information or to volunteer with Rochester International Association.

Meals on Wheels delivery driver

Deliver hot, nutritious meals to people unable to prepare or access meals themselves. You may volunteer on regular (same day each week) or on-call (days may vary) basis. Flexible driving schedules are available every day of the week. Weekend drivers are especially needed at this time. Call 287-2010 for more information or to volunteer with Family Service Rochester.

Gardener

This opportunity is for volunteers with flower and perennial garden care experience and knowledge. We have outdoor opportunities beginning in the spring and continuing throughout the growing season. We also need help with watering our plants and flowers during the growing season. Call 252-2161 for more information or to volunteer with the Ronald McDonald House.
