Rochester, MN – On Thursday, March 7 Rochester Art Center will celebrate three exciting events in conjunction with the exhibition Tim Eitel: Elsewhere. A fully illustrated exhibition catalog and special edition print by Tim Eitel will be unveiled and available for purchase prior to a lecture by New York art critic Gregory Volk.
Rochester Art Center (RAC) has designed and published an 88 page fully-illustrated exhibition catalog with essays by Gregory Volk and RAC Chief Curator Kris Douglas. Tim Eitel has created a special edition lithography print. Both are available for purchase at a reception on March 7 beginning at 6:30 pm at Rochester Art Center. Admission to the reception is free; a cash bar and light refreshments will be available.
Shannon Fitzgerald, Rochester Art Center Executive Director states: “Rochester Art Center is thrilled to launch its new Distinguished Lecturer Series, a new public program in which we invite dynamic leaders in the field of contemporary art to Rochester to engage the community about contemporary art practices that relate to RAC’s exhibition program and mission.”
She continues “I am delighted that my esteemed colleague Gregory Volk is inaugurating this important series. Gregory is an astute thinker, a cutting-edge curator, and brilliant writer. He has been ahead of the curve in his curatorial work and writing about some of the most innovative artists of our time. He is a passionate speaker and I look forward to his sharing his thoughts about Tim Eitel’s work with Rochester.”
Gregory Volk is a New York-based art critic and freelance curator. He writes regularly for Art in America, where he is a contributing editor, and his articles and reviews have also appeared in many other publications, including Parkett and Sculpture. He has written extensively about contemporary art in Germany including “Figuring the New Germany” Art in America, 2005 and “Neo Rauch: Time Straddler” Art in America, 2010. Among his many contributions to exhibition catalogs are essays on Ayse Erkmen (Turkish Pavilion, Venice Biennale, 2011), Joan Jonas (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, 2007), and Bruce Nauman (Milwaukee Art Museum, 2006). His essay on Vito Acconci is featured in Vito Acconci: Diary of a Body, 1969-1973, published by Charta in 2007 and his essay on Andy Warhol’s late work appears in Andy Warhol: The Last Decade, published in 2009 by the Milwaukee Art Museum and Prestel.
Volk has curated numerous exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad, including Carnival Within at UferHallen in Berlin (2009), which he co-curated with Sabine Russ; Three Parts Whole at i8 Gallery in Reykjavik, Iceland (2011); and Outdoor Excursions at Burlington City Arts in Burlington, Vermont (2011). Volk received a BA from Colgate University and a MA from Columbia University. In addition to his activities as a writer and curator, he is Associate Professor in the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University.
