Jefferson Elementary becomes Celebration School

Jefferson Elementary School was recognized for earning Celebration School status from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) at the Rochester School Board regular meeting on Tuesday, February 19th.
“We are excited and encouraged to see the growth that has taken place with our students. We continue with our focus on school improvement. We are confident this focus will continue to sustain and increase our growth,” said Dr. Lewis.
Jefferson Elementary had been designated as a Focus School based on student performance data from 2010 and 2011. Focus Schools are those among the ten percent of schools making the largest contribution to the achievement gap in Minnesota, as determined by the Federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
“We are very proud of the work that Jefferson has done to raise student achievement over the past several years,” said Dr. Brenda Lewis, Executive Director of Secondary Education. “Jefferson staff persistently worked to foster a learning environment of continuous improvement and achievement. The Jefferson families also partnered with us to ensure the success of all our Jefferson students.”
The Kay E. Jacobs Memorial Award which recognizes excellent leadership and involvement with the Minnesota Association of School Administrators for administrators with less than ten years of experience was given to Dr. Jean Lubke.
Also recognized at the meeting were the participants of Rochester School District’s FIRST LEGO League, a robotics program designed to get youth in grades fourth through eighth interested in science and technology. Four Rochester teams will advance to state:
The Robot Squad: Claire Schleusner, Michael Thomas, Noah Hanson, Nathan Kanzelman, Weston Fyles, and Lucas Iezzi; The Rochester Brainstormers: Ben Frick, Ben Dirstine, Brandon Nee, Ishaan Govindarajan, Jiwon Kim, Jon Klein, and Nikhil Marda; SIRUS-ETLA: Jared Nathan, Brock Sonju, Ethan Thompson-Jewell, Celia Napton, Ben Gifford, and Tommy Welch; The Brony Ponies: Aaron Mead, Josh Hill, Ryan Glascock, Cooper Klotzbach, Jacob Hansen, and Jakob DeMattos; and the Peanut Butter Bots: Lars Anderson, Rhys Luke, Gabe Hanson, Justin Homme, and Marcus Targonski.
Congratulations to Rochester Public Schools for what appears to be a season of much success.
