Savage, MN, February 18, 2013: The Rochester Senior Center is inviting the public to a healthcare event on Wednesay, February 27, 2013, Rochester. The health care discussion will include the Minnesota Health Plan (MHP) and how we get there after the Affordable Healthcare Exchanges. The forum will be held at 10:30 at the Rochester Senior Center, 121 North Broadway, Rochester. Elliot Johnson will be the health care event speaker. There is no cost.
Elliot Johnson, fourth year medical student and member to the Physicians for a National Health Program, PNHP, will lead discussion of our health care issues. Physicians for a National Health Program is a non-profit research and education organization of 18,000 physicians, medical students and health professionals who support single-payer national health insurance. Elliot has been active at the Capitol in favor of single-payer health care and has perspective on implementation of the Affordable Care Act even as we look forward to truly comprehensive reform.
Organizer of the Forum, Sharon Schmidt originally of Tracy, worked for 22 years for the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration in Maryland. Schmidt feels it is important to bring rural areas into the health care conversation. Schmidt states, “There are pockets in Minnesota that still do not know about the Minnesota Health Plan and that is a one-payer bill co-written by Senator John Marty. In 2017, the States will be able to ask Congress for an exemption from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as long as those States have a plan that does better than the ACA. If passed, the Minnesota Health Plan will cover everyone and will cost the State less.”
Former Minnesota House member, farmer, and strong advocate for farmers and agricultural issues, Ted Winter, says “I live in rural America and the cost of and access to affordable health care is becoming more of a burden to the people. The high deductibles people are forced to choose to reduce their costs cause them not to seek the medical care they really need. The only way to fix this problem is to self-insure all the people in this state in one Single Payer Health Plan that works like the self-insured group plans sold in this state and nation. If we can work toward some understanding of this self-insured option for people in this state and nation at this meeting, it will allow us to achieve together a health care plan that will treat all people with dignity.”
Paul Sobocinski, a farmer from Wabasso and longtime health care reform advocate states, “The current system of health care is simply not working for more and more Minnesotans. America’s current health care system means pay more, get less. In my 20 year plus experience of working at the Minnesota State Capitol on behalf of family farmers and sustainable communities I see a system that has not adequately addressed health care.”
The Senior Center Health Care Forum on February 27 will address these issues. All members of the public are invited to be part of this discussion.
