Superintendent Muñoz delivered an update on measures Rochester School District is taking to address matters of school safety at the Rochester School Board regular meeting Tuesday, February 5.
“We are currently internally reviewing our procedures and practices and are making adjustments wherever necessary. We also sent a staff member to the National School Response Conference.”
As a result of the new information gathered at this conference, Muñoz foreshadowed a presentation slated for the next regular school district meeting regarding the physical structure of the school buildings.
“We are going to present some information and ask permission to go out and seek bids on some equipment. We’ll have someone here to demonstrate its capabilities at our next meeting.”
What “it” is a matter of some speculation, but “safety equipment” does suggest metal detectors or some other body or school bag scanning device.
The 55th Annual Rochester Regional Science Fair for grades 6-12 will take place Tuesday February 12 through Saturday February 16 at Rochester Community and Technical College. The theme is “Healthy Living.” Community volunteers are still needed, no science experience required.
Also, on Saturday February 10, the Gateway Science Fair will take place at the Gonda Building on the Mayo Clinic Campus for students grades 3 through 6.
Because over the last four years, the enrollment at Gibbs Elementary has increased by 168 students, 100 students over school capacity, the Board unanimously approved a motion to close any further Open Enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year. Further discussion on this matter will take place at district hosted World Cafes.
Regarding strategic planning, the district Measurement Team met in late January to finalize rubrics and measurements plans, and shall present their recommendations to the core planning team, to the school board as well as to the public on Thursday February 28 from 9:30a-12:00pm in the Edison Board room.
Board Member Richard Hinds highlighted several upcoming events: The Autism Gala, a dance and coronation for students age 13 and older with developmental disabilities will take place at Willow Creek Middle School on Friday February 15; the Young Athlete’s Expo will take place Sunday February 24th 10:30a -1:30p at the Rochester Recreation Center, open to all youth, free of charge.
