$41,200 awarded to Rochester Public Schools

The Rochester Public School Foundation presented two checks totaling $41,200 to the Rochester Public Schools at the School Board meeting on January 22, 2013.

The 2nd Annual Haunted Hallways event reported an attendance of 7000, raising over $38,000 (a 20 percent increase from last year). Each participating school group received $1000 for immediate use.

In addition, $18,200 was granted to teachers whose proposals were selected by the Foundation. Winning proposals are: “We Care. We Learn. We Lead. We Inspire. WE READ!” by Jared Groehler, Jean Murphy, Jodi Armstrong, and Alison Krinke at Franklin Elementary to support the Action 100 framework for reading;

“Outdoor Classroom” by Kari Kolling Anderson, Julie Brock, Amy Monson, Liz Proper, Jeff Swegarden, and Stefanie Whitney at Mayo High School;

“Kindergarten Reads at Home” by Kim McDonald and Stacy VanBenschoten at Gage Elementary School to support the Action 100 framework;

“Offering a New Approach to Mental Health” by Jolene Becher, Karla Bollesen andRobert Flores at Mayo High School using I-Pads and specific Mental Health Applications;

“FIRST Robotics Competition Team 2530” by Lonne Senska and Ellen Sassenberg for Rochester Area High Schools to sponsor F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an international program, for STEM;

“Cambodian Student Association” by Sam Ouk for Rochester Area High Schools to support the development of social and academic support through afterschool groups for the Cambodian community, with hopes to replicate the project with other immigrant communities in Rochester;

“InSciEd Out Garden Project” by James Kulzer and Jane Barton at Lincoln K-8 to support a shed and green house to raise plants for science fair experiments, cell studies, and propagation work;

And finally, “iPads for All” by Dianne Arneson and Aurora Kubach at Lincoln K-8 to provide iPads for special needs students.

The Haunted Hallways event is planned to roll again in October 2013.
