Task force will evaluate Dover-Eyota Preschool program

The Dover-Eyota School Board is in the process of setting up a task force to study preschool facilities for the district. Currently, the preschool program is being operated out of the Dover Elementary School building. The board wants to evaluate if that is the best location for the program. The task force will be made up of administrators, school board members, teachers, preschool staff and parents. “It’s broader than that,” said Superintendent Bruce Klaehn. “We want to look at the entire program.”
The district is also looking into the Dover Elementary School building security needs along with a few additions at the Eyota Elementary and High School buildings. Security is one of the things at the top of the board’s list for 2013. Outside access and law enforcement entry to the buildings are top concerns.
The school district is estimating student enrollment for 2013-2014 to remain level with the 2012-2013 school year. However, current records indicate kindergarten enrollment is estimated at 100 students, which is at a level exceeding the maximum level of 90 students. This an increase of 11 students.
“The policy says 90,” Klaehn said referring to the maximum number of kindergarten students. “It is a guideline and the board can change that. I think the number will come down with summer birthdays.” If all 100 students are residents of the district then all are automatically accepted. “Today it isn’t an issue but in two months it could be,” said Klaehn.
Dover-Eyota Explore student test scores continue to show improvement. The scores are used to evaluate student readiness for college in the areas of math, English, reading and science. “There is all also a career interest component,” said Todd Rowekamp, High School Principal.
