Chatfield’s Math Data team helps students make the mark “The Perfect Storm”

Chatfield High School’s Seniors hit an all-time high for passing the Math MCA test. With 93 percent of their students passing the test, this far has exceeded any of our expectations, according to High School Principal, Randy Paulson. “Our original goal was to have 75 to 80 percent of our students to pass, but with efforts of our Math Data Team (Dan Conway- Math Instructor, Jeff DeBuhr- Math Instructor, Mitch Lee- Online teacher and also Lindsey Wojtkiewicz- School Counselor, Randy Erickson- School Psychologist, and Randy Paulson- High School Principal) we far surpassed our goal.”
The students worked hard to accomplish this, especially the last group with seven of the eleven students passing the last retake. Mr. Conway commented, “They (Chatfield Seniors) were motivated and worked really hard. I am extremely proud of them.”
Some of the factors that lead up to the success according to Conway: “We took a multifaceted approach where the students worked on improving their general math skills, reviewed and re-learned the actual content, and also practiced test-taking strategies.”
Online Teacher Mitch Lee commented on the quality. “When you start with a solid program and fantastic teachers, the road to success is already paved. We have managed to improve upon that formula with our math intervention program that is tailored to finding and shoring up weak points in their personal skill set, or reviewing ideas that may have gathered some rust since last use.”
The students were very focused on passing the test, which senior student Kelsey Buss enthusiastically stated, “I made use of the time in SST (Supervised Study Time) and my own time and I really wanted to pass. Mr. DeBuhr said that I ended up in the top eight percent!”
Mr. DeBuhr focused on each individual student to help them succeed. “Students were placed into different levels of interventions based on test scored and teacher recommendations. We attempted to use data to identify the direct needs of each student and address those needs to the best of our ability.”
Recently, Chatfield High School implemented a Senior incentive program that improved students’ attitudes toward performance on the assessment, and they were engaged and interested in the review sessions. According to Mr. DeBuhr, “The overall plan created the perfect storm for motivated learning at the appropriate level for each student. In the end the most credit must be given to the students.” Mr. DeBuhr and Mr. Conway both were involved in providing review sessions during the students’ SST time after lunch.
