Eyota is one of 17 cities that will benefit from the extension of the Rochester Sales Tax. Rochester will set aside $5 million dollars that will be distributed per capita to the cities. The final approval is scheduled for the January 7 Rochester City Council meeting.
Eyota is slated to receive $211,000. The funds will be distributed half before July 31, 2013, and the second half prior to July 31, 2014. The funds are to be used for economic development. It will be the responsibility of each city to determine which projects meet the needs of the city.
In a letter to the city, Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede said, “We believe you are in the best position to determine your city’s economic development projects.” For that reason, project approval by Rochester would not be necessary.
The Eyota City Council is waiting for the final plat to be presented by developer John Keefe on the Keefe housing addition proposal. The council is waiting for more details when the final plat is presented, but agreed with the major points of the contract.
Jeff Peck, current Assistant Chief of the Eyota Volunteer Fire Department, was selected as fire department training officer. Tyrel Clark was appointed Eyota’s representative to the sewer board for 2013-2014. Clark will take over as Mayor of Eyota in January.
