In light of the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut, visitors to Rochester Art Center’s Free Family Day will be creating Sunprint Snowflakes to be used to decorate the school when students return next month.
The goal of the Sandy Hook PTA is to create a “Winter Wonderland” for students when classes resume in a new building. A Sunprint is a cyanotype print made by placing an opaque object on a light-sensitive paper and exposing it to sunlight.
The exposed paper changes to blue in the light, leaving a ghosted image of the object. Children and their families will make unique paper snowflakes to use as their blocking object for these sunprints. Families may take their finished snowflakes and prints home, but will also be asked to make an additional print to send to Sandy Hook.
