At the Rochester School Board regular meeting Tuesday, November 13, IBM employee Mike Prochaska announced that in addition to the donated time from over 100 IBM employees to Rochester Public Schools, IBM will donate $117,000 in grants to over 40 schools in the district and their PTAs.
“And that will continue to grow. We are at $120,000 right now, and there will probably be another $10,000 that will come in before the campaign is done,” said Prochaska.
To add to the pleasure of receiving IBM’s generous donation, Superintendent Muñoz was pleased to announce that the College Board has given Rochester School District national Honor Roll recognition for increasing access to AP course work while increasing the percentage of students earning scores of three or higher on AP Exams.
Only 539 school districts in the country were awarded this distinction, and 11 were in the state of Minnesota. Since 2010, Rochester has increased the number of students participating in AP from 812 to 916 and also improved the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of three or more by two percent.
“We have been trying to get underrepresented students into our AP classes. It is nice to be recognized nationally for doing such and I want to once again thank the teachers and administrators at the high schools for all the hard work they have done,” said Muñoz.
Regarding the results of the General Election on Tuesday, November 6, voters of the district chose among nominees for the four-year term vacancies caused by the term expiration of Board Director positions 1, 3, and 7 on January 1, 2013. The elected candidates were Richard Hinds for Director 1 with 26,473 votes, Deborah Seelinger for Director 3 with 29,285 votes, and Dan O’Neil for Director 7 with 23,836 votes. The official term of office for all three shall begin January 7, 2013.
