Holiday trees will be decorated once again for Hiawatha Homes Foundation’s Festival of Trees. Just as it has for the last 27 years, the Festival welcomes over 900 volunteers to band together to: decorate more than one hundred trees, offer fun activities like bounce houses, ring toss, basketball, and bowling for families, welcome Santa, design gingerbread houses, decorate cookies, stock the holiday gift shop and, most importantly, to spread good will while spreading good cheer.
“The Festival of Trees is a staple in our community,” says Crystal Landherr with Hiawatha Homes, “This is a family friendly event and of course, all of the proceeds benefit people with disabilities living right here in Olmsted County.”
Nothing could be more winterly than a wonderland to kick off the holiday season. The Festival of Trees begins Wednesday, November 21 and runs through Sunday, November 25 at the Mayo Civic Center. Each day has its own theme and is packed full with events. Hours are Wednesday 11:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m.; Thursday - Saturday 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.; and Sunday 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Admission for adults is $5, tour groups and seniors, $4, children (2-12) $3, and under 2, Free.
To provide an overview of the schedule: Wednesday is Senior Citizen’s Day with a luncheon and Senior Fashion show. On Wednesday night Fuel Rochester, a networking group for young professionals, will meet at the Festival for their monthly networking meeting. Thursday is, obviously, Thanksgiving. Friday is Children’s Day with carnival style activities, a magician, dance music and Santa Clause. Saturday is Gingerbread Family day for which local celebrities will have decorated gingerbread houses and guests are invited to decorate their own gingerbread cookies while listening to the Gingerbread Man children’s story read aloud.
All week long the Gift Thyme Shoppe will be open, as will the Holiday Café and a silent auction. Decorated trees and gift baskets will be up for raffle as well. Guests can expect all-day entertainment provided by local musicians and dance performers.
The Festival of Trees is abundantly more than its celebrated trees. But perhaps the trees serve as the perfect totem for what glister shines through even the darkest season from a community who carefully tends to its roots: the families who are the strongest living fibers reaching far and wide under the surface of things.
