If you are in the Christmas Spirit, want to get in the Christmas Spirit, or just want to have a fun night out, then the award-winning KTTC Lights@Bluff Valley may be just the thing for you. Just a 20 minute drive from Rochester to Zumbro Falls, Bluff Valley Campground is all decked out for your enjoyment.
The campground is illuminated by 21 light displays with various themes. You can find your way through the walking maze guided by the 60,000 LED lights. “Grandpa Leon does the bulb check on the maze,” said Adam Waters with a grin. Adam is the Operations Manager for the campground and the son of Nate and Laura Waters, owners of Bluff Valley Campground.
The Waters purchased the campground 26 years ago and started KTTC Lights@Bluff Valley 11 years ago. They got the idea at a trade show in Texas. But, the light show is only one of the events to experience. You can leave your car and ride a wagon through the light displays, watch the theatrical show put on by volunteer high school groups, play glow in the dark mini golf, disc golf, basketball and you can enjoy their dinner buffet served from 5:00 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“A lot of people are taking the wagon ride,” Adam said. New this year, you don’t even have to drive yourself to the campground. You can take the trolley from Rochester. “First year sponsor, Rochester Trolley, is bringing people out each day in November,” said Adam.
Each individual in the Waters family has played a part in developing the show. Nate and Laura developed the idea and Laura signed up the sponsors. Adam and his brother Blake have worked setting up the show. High school groups can volunteer their time at the campground to make money to support their group. “We have paid high school groups $215,000,” said Adam. The event attracted 4,200 cars full of people last year. “Average is about five people per car,” Adam said. “People come mostly from Southeast Minnesota, but people do come down from the Twin Cities.”
You can enjoy the lights Wednesday through Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday, November 25, is the last night you can enjoy the sights and sounds in Bluff Valley.
