A report on the initial meeting of the district’s new Technology Focus Group and an update on plans for the Veterans Day ceremony highlighted the Pine Island School Board’s Oct. 15 meeting.
Technology committee
sets goals
Technology Focus Group members met Oct. 11 to define their committee’s scope (“all of technology” was their conclusion) and to set goals and a timeline for achieving them.
The group will bring its six-month plan, for operational changes and hardware requirements, to the board in late January or early February. “This will need board input and action in order to make the changes during the late spring and over the summer,” said Taylor Bauman, technology director for the school.
Then in the spring, the committee will present its 12- to 18-month plan for wireless expansion, iPad assessments, software and curriculum, etc.
Technology Focus Group members include Bauman, Superintendent Tammy Berg-Beniak, K-8 principal Jillynne Raymond, high school English teacher/technology integration specialist Patrick Smith, 7th-grade science teacher Alan Dewey, 1st-grade teacher Josh Westphal, board member Kim Fall, Clint Miller of the Pine Island Academics, Arts, and Athletics Foundation and Christian Wernau of the Parent, Teacher, Student Organization.
“We would still like to add a couple of members, one from Community Ed and one from the library,” Bauman said.
The committee will also ask student groups, such as the student council, to offer suggestions. “We’ll take their input and adjust our process as needed.”
Veterans Day event
Superintendent Berg-Beniak announced that Vietnam War veteran Floyd Riester of Wabasha will give the keynote address at the school’s Veterans Day ceremony.
She also provided Riester’s bio:
When he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1964, he was 17 and a new high school graduate. After basic training and jump school, he joined the 173rd Airborne and served in Okinawa and in Vietnam.
He was 20 when he was discharged, and he remains active in veterans’ activities.
He serves as president of the Rochester chapter of the 173rd Airborne Association and as vice president of the Rochester Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial.
He helped organize and host three 173rd Airborne reunions in Rochester. Through the Wounded Warriors project, he takes vets hunting in Minnesota. And he and his wife Karen are directors of the 173rd Airborne Memorial at Fort Benning, Ga.
The Veterans Day event, which will also feature music by the senior high band and choir and a special tribute to World War II veterans, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Nov. 12 at the school.
Community Planning Team kicks off
The Pine Island Community Planning Team held its first meeting Oct. 10, reported John Champa, a member of the school board who serves on the planning team.
The team, consisting of representatives of the school board, city council and Economic Development Authority, formed to design short- and long-term growth plans for the town.
Its inaugural meeting was a brainstorming session, Champa said, focused on the community’s current and future needs and a timeline for addressing those needs.
Other business
•Board members and school staff invited students’ parents to take a survey that pertains to the school’s three goals, high student achievement, collaborative work environment and effective and efficient operations. The parent survey can be accessed at www.pineisland.k12.mn.us and requires completing by Nov. 1.
•The board voted 7-0 to authorize purchase of a new school bus and a new Chevrolet Suburban, each to replace old vehicles. Estimated costs after trade-ins are $80,000 for the bus and $35,000 for the Suburban.
•A new school program, an athletics hall of fame, will begin in the spring with a ceremony to honor the first inductees.
The board will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at the school.
