Cautious elation broke out at the Pine Island City Council’s Oct. 16 meeting after the announcement that Elk Run Biobusiness Park has, almost definitely, found its first tenant.
That anticipated tenant, a publicly traded company, has signed a letter of intent to locate at the biobusiness park, and if matters proceed as hoped, construction on a 50,000 square-foot building will begin in the spring.
Though Mayor Paul Perry declined to specify what company (its name is still a secret), he did say it’s a vaccine manufacturer.
Elk Run’s first tenant, in its opening phase, will employee 100 workers. Later, the business plans to expand to 200,000 square feet and more than 200 employees.
One point needing resolving before the deal can become official is a list of 18 conditions set by the City of Pine Island to be met by Elk Run’s developer, Tower Investments. “All are acceptable,” Mark Welch told the council. He is principal engineer at G-Cubed, Inc., the engineering firm for the Elk Run project.
“At Tower Investments, they’re as hopeful as I’ve ever seen them,” said Mayor Perry. “In fact, John Pierce, senior vice president at Tower, is going to Texas to see if he can buy clean rooms instead of building them.”
The council unanimously and happily approved Elk Run’s first tenant’s preliminary plat, contingent on Tower’s meeting the city’s 18 stipulations.
