Contrary to the recent dismal report which examined why students are leaving Rochester Public Schools, the official October 1st enrollment showed district student numbers to be up. As of October 1st, Rochester Public Schools have 16,734 students (almost 300 more than last year). The greatest increases are at the high school level, with 169 new tenth graders, 96 new eleventh graders, and 136 new twelfth graders. This positive news was reported by Superintendent Muñoz at the School Board meeting on Tuesday, October 2nd.
In another cheerful presentation, Kit Hawkins, president of the Rochester Education Association, was accompanied by three teachers from Pinewood Elementary to offer feedback on the success of the 100 Book Challenge with their students.
Third grade teacher Barb Lajoie said she received notice this week that Pinewood is “number one in the country for having students on target” in meeting their reading goals.
Karen Pathoulas of fifth grade said that she “attributes some of that success to our strong community, such as the Kiwanis volunteers and retired folks in the neighborhood of the school that volunteer to read with students every day.”
Regarding the proposed property tax levy for 2013, the Board chose to set the levy maximum at $37.1 million, which is 1.26 percent less than last year’s levy. The figure decided upon for the levy includes the technology resubmission for replacement technology and iPads.
The final levy will be open for discussion and public comment at the School Board session December 4 at 6:30pm, to be adopted the following week, December 11.
