Martin E. Johnson, age 89, of Ostrander, MN died Saturday September 22, 2012 at the Ostrander Care Center were he had resided for the last 6 months.
Martin Edward Johnson was born December 28, 1922 in Ostrander to Ingle and Anna (Loken) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Ostrander Lutheran Church and attended school through the 8th grade at Ostrander Public School and graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1940. Martin played on the high school football team for 4 years, part of the time at center. Following graduation he worked for Rendahl & Highum’s Livestock and Feed. In 1942 Martin enlisted in the U.S. Army receiving his basic training at Camp Roberts in California. He then transferred to Camp Hale in Colorado to train for skiing in the 10th Mountain Division, training for defending Norway for a possible German invasion. He had entered the Army initially because of his parent’ emigration to the United States from Norway. Martin was redirected to Italy where he completed his military career. He was discharged at Camp Carson, CO in 1945.
On October 20, 1946 he was united in marriage to Ethel Osterud at the parsonage in Ostrander. In 1948 he became a partner in Hadland and Osterud, Inc., an International Harvester farm Equipment business combined with Skelly Petroleum Products business in Ostrander. It operated until it was dissolved in 1987. Martin and Ethel enjoyed many trips over the years sponsored by International Harvester, In 1988 Martin, his niece Lisa and sister Hannah traveled to Norway to visit his ancestral home. Upon retiring Martin restored a number of gasoline pumps, a cutter sleigh and occasionally other antiques. He and Ethel also operated a coffee shop in Ostrander serving many items prepared by his sister Hannah. They served a lot of free coffee over the years. Martin enjoyed antiquing, hunting and fishing and took pride in his business, his retirement and his home. He was a member of the Hanson Raabe VFW Post in Spring Valley and the Hanson-Hattlestad American Legion Post in Ostrander.
Martin was a kind and lovable man who leaves behind a host of friends along with his wife Ethel of Ostrander, a sister-in-law Yvonne Osterud, nephews; Jan Osterud and Max Perkins, nieces; Lisa (Jerry) Beard, Breea Osterud and Patrice Pelletrier all of Newburgh, IN and a dear friend and caregiver Gene Simon. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters; Hannah, Julia and Mildred, 1 brother Ingman and a Brother-in-law Robert Osterud.
No services will be held and burial will take place at a later date.
