CLARENCE M. HEGNA, age 94, of Mabel, Minnesota, a former longtime farmer from the Amherst area, died Sunday, September 2, 2012 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.
Clarence was born March 10, 1918 in rural Whalen, Minnesota to Christ and Marie (Rein) Hegna. He took over farming at age 17 when his father died suddenly. At a young age he went to North Dakota to help with the harvest, but returned to farming in the rural Whalan and Peterson areas. He was married to Helen Larson, who passed away, and then married Rosella Arends who also passed away. He was a member of the Elstad Lutheran Church, served on the Amherst Township Board for several years, and after retiring enjoyed traveling and especially dancing. He has been a resident at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel since 2010.
Clarence is survived by two nephews Roger Torgerud of Stewartville and Ken (Bonnie) Torgerud of Rushford; three nieces Ilene (Richard) Peterson of Mabel, LeAnne Lauden of Onalaska, Wisconsin, and Deborah (Mark) Rasmussen of Rushford; and many grand nieces and nephews, several good friends and dancing partners. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Leonard and Miner; a sister and brother –in-law Mildred and Howard Torgerud ; two nieces and their husbands Marilyn and Lendell Lund and Janice and Vern Norby; and a nephew Hilton Torgerud.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at the Elstad Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro, Minnesota with the Rev. Kay Wold officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Vistitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is assisting with arrangements.
