The Eyota City Council approved a request from Brad Boice, Eyota Public Works Director, to spend approximately $4,000 to clean a water main to improve water flow. The water main is located in an older part of town and was installed between 1937 and 1958. Boice will contract with Infratech to perform a procedure known as Polly Pigging. The procedure involves running a swab through the water main to clean out deposits that have built up. Boice hopes to double the water flow.
There are two hydrants located on Lafayette Avenue that are affected by the low water flow. The water flow in these hydrants is so low that the fire department is instructed not to hook up to them. The procedure would affect water service to residents in this area for some period of time. The council discussed putting together a long-term plan to replace the older water main sometime in the next couple of years.
The council also approved approximately $2,800 for Boice to replace worn gate valves and check valves at the city well house. The council tabled a decision on what to with customers who are delinquent in paying their water bills. There was to discussion on whether the water should be shut off or is there another way to handle these situations.
The council also called for a work night for Monday, August 27 to work on the budget. Mayor Wes Bussell said he would like to hold the budget flat for 2013. The city audit this year showed that the city is losing money in several areas and will have to raise rates for water, sewer and storm sewer. “They are enterprise systems,” Bussell said. “They need to pay for themselves.” The council approved Bussell to send a Request for Proposal (RFP) to make the city generator ready in case of emergencies. The goal of the project would be to make power available to the well house, ambulance building, fire hall and city hall in case of an emergency. The project would set up a system where a generator could be plugged in to restore power to these facilities. Councilman Joe Loftus said he would like to have the plan in place by the end of the year.
Tuesday, August 14 at 5:00 p.m. is the deadline for candidates to file for city council positions and mayor. The city council has two openings for four-year terms and the mayor is a two-year term.
