Plans to close access road in Byron?

Plans for reconstruction of the frontage road continue as Byrons city council moves forward. City Engineer Bill Angermann informed the council, “The interchange will be located at 10th Avenue. In our discussions with the DOT we’re looking at right of way issues along the frontage road, maintenance and financing options.”

The construction date for this project appears to be years away, yet the council was ready to find a good starting point to address funding. Current plans would have the state taking back ownership of the corridor, that changes state grant amounts for the project. “We continue to have discussions as to how that will impact funding and it appears it will impact us more favorably than we had originally thought. We are working on having proper amenities on a budget the way it should be,” added Angermann.

Mixed feelings over frontage road access closure in the area in front of Margarito’s Restaurant resulted in further debate over the pros and cons of the closure. At least three council members and City Engineer Angermann were in favor of eventually closing the access. “It’s my opinion that now is the time to start planning on closing that access,” announced Angermann. “This will become more of a safety problem in the future with the added third lane added to Highway 14. I just feel that it is not a very safe intersection right now,” added Angermann. Local residents do concur that the access from the Highway to the Frontage Road has been a trouble spot with numerous accidents occurring at that location through the years. The council has listened to the views of Byron residents at recent public hearings. Fact gathering will continue, while taking into consideration how much the traffic will increase on nearby roadways due to the proposed closure.

Mayor Ann Diercks held firm in her opinion that the frontage road access stay opened. “I would like to see some statistics regarding accidents in that particular intersection and until I see anything like that to change opinions here I’m all for keeping the road access open,” said Diercks.

Other details studied in the future development of Byron are plans to replace water mains in the 4th Ave N.E. area, the current water main in the area is fifty plus years old. Curb and gutter along the frontage road are also in the blue prints, as are plans to install and enforce no parking along the street. Currently there are no signs regarding parking in the area and it would require an ordinance to be passed by council at a future city council meeting. A separate bike path rather than a bike lane on the far right side of the lane also proved to be a popular with residents in the plans evolution.

The Byron City Council next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 22 at 6:00 pm at Byron City Hall.
