Syler’s Tavern gets council OK for patio

Syler’s Tavern in northwestern Rochester received approval from the city council to provide outdoor dining as part of the business’ evolution into a quieter dining establishment.
The business, formerly The Break Room, has a history of noise and litter complaints from neighbors. Since ceasing business as the Break Room and opening Syler’s Tavern in January, police calls have dropped drastically. Owner Troy Wing states his business now generates most revenue through food sales and does 85 percent of its business before 10 pm. However, neighbors were still wary that upon receiving approval for the patio, the business could revert back into a bar atmosphere.
“It’s a trust issue,” said councilmember Sandra Means.
Three neighbors asked the council to deny the patio request, and stated that Wing had not communicated his business plans to them after they had for years dealt with litter and noise issues coming from the Break Room, which had unsuccessfully sought a patio permit in 2010.
“We have not had any of these issues become present with Syler’s Tavern,” said Wing.
The council was generally pleased with the direction Wing has taken his business, and councilmember Randy Staver noted that it would be too hard to go back, because the DJ sound system, dance floor and lighting have been taken out of the business.
Still councilmember Mark Bilderback was disappointed with the business’ lack of dialogue with neighbors.
“The same neighbors that are here tonight voicing opposition are the ones that were here when you had the Break Room and you had the bass issues,” he said. “Some of those issues don’t sound like they’ve been resolved.”
The conditional use permit, with the stipulations that patio service ends at 10 pm, that there be no amplified music on the patio, and that it is bordered by a shrub lining, was approved by a 5-2 vote, with Bilderback and Bruce Snyder voting against it.
The permit will come back to the council in January for review.
“I understand there’s a history there,” said councilmember Michael Wojcik. “If Mr. Wing sticks to everything he says he’s going to do, that’s going to alleviate a lot of the issues.”
“If the issue was that the business needed to be changed and the business owner changed the business, that’s something that should be a good thing and not something to continue punishing him over.”

Jason Sethre, Publisher of Olmsted County Journal says:Thank you for making mention of this, Billy RAy. I'm sure you are not the only one thinking the same thing. We usually go to press on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. for a Wednesday delivery date at the USPS locations in Olmsted County. Due to Monday, May 28 being a holiday, we had to bump up our press run date to Friday, May 25, 2012. Obviously, moving the press run up did not allow for us to be in a position to publish the closure of Syler's Tavern that occurred on Saturday -- we'd had already printed 62,000 papers. Fortunately, these circumstances, in all regards, do not happen often.
Thanks again, Billy RAy, for pointing this out. We know you and the rest of our OCJ readers are reading and paying attention, which is good for keeping us accountable to provide a good quality news publication.
