Minnesota Virtual Academy teacher recognized for innovative teaching and overall dedication
ARLINGTON, VA - The National Coalition for Public School Options (NCPSO), a coalition of parents, students, teachers and advocates who support public school choice, announced today Minnesota Virtual Academy 12th grade teacher Becky Carr as a national finalist in the coalition's American Pioneer of Teaching award competition.
NCPSO launched the American Pioneer of Teaching award to recognize top performing elementary and secondary teachers who work in pioneering public schools, such as online and traditional charter schools.
More than 900 teachers were nominated by students through the NCPSO website. The 19 state finalists were selected by members of the NCPSO Board through an anonymous scoring system which awarded points for harnessing innovative teaching methods, adapting teaching methods to meets the needs of individual students, fostering mentoring relationships with students and overall dedication.
"Mrs. Carr stands out above the rest of the teachers my son has had at his school. She is consistently very positive in all her communications, and she communicates often with reminders and upcoming information," said a parent. "She goes above and beyond to be personal and she just sounds really interested and invested in her subject and her students. She also uses fun attention grabbers such as sending the kids to watch a YouTube video that emphasizes something she is teaching."
The state finalists will be posted online at www.facebook.com/NationalCoalitionforPublicSchoolOptions.
The national finalist will be selected through a public voting process began Monday, April 30 and will culminate Friday, May 4 at 8:00PM EDT. The finalist will be announced on Tuesday, May 8 in recognition of National Teacher Appreciation Week.
The National Coalition for Public School Options is an alliance of parents that supports and defends parents' rights to access the best public school options for their children. The Coalition supports the creation of public school options, including charter schools, online schools, magnet schools, tuition scholarship programs, open enrollment policies and other innovative education programs. Additionally, we advocate for free and equal access without restrictions to these public schools for all children. For more information visit www.publicschooloptions.org.
