Byron Mayor Ann M. Diercks extended “a formal thank you to local Kwik Trip for their generosity” in donating to the local fireworks fund. Byron Kwik Trip Manager Naomie Froyum said “it’s one way we can give back to our community and the place that we call home”. The Mayor also mentioned a possible local vendor for upcoming fireworks shows. The City Council members present were all in agreement with the necessary checking of qualifications and references from the vendor.
During the General Business section of the meeting, a motion for the 2012 Emergency Services and Fire contract with Salem Township passed quickly and unanimously.
Deputy Wood provided the Law Enforcement Update for Byron and urged area businesses and the public to be on the lookout for counterfeit bills circulating recently. “We have seen one hundred dollar bills printed on five dollar bills, to look at it by hand you’d consider it a one hundred dollar bill. If you hold the cash up to the light you will see right on the security strip that it’s actually a five and not a one hundred dollar bill.”
City Hall use during non-business hours had been a tabled issue from the March 11 meeting of this year, and again was put on hold. The concern for building safety issues, insurance, deposits, price, staffing of the facility and overall guidelines to the building use are still in question, as is the overall vote on the subject.
Mayor Diercks was open to the discussing both sides of the idea, saying, “This may be an option that would be great for seniors to meet or use as a senior center and others as well, if we were able to work out the details.”
City Council Member Jason Snow added, “I want to be sure we are not taking anything away from a local business, there are numerous places in town that when rented help out that local business.”
The issue will be slated for further discussion during the next Byron City Council meeting on Wednesday, May 9, at 6:00 PM.
