Dover-Eyota evaluating football field lighting

The Dover Eyota School Board received an estimate and details for replacing lights on the football field. The estimate came from Musco Lighting. Musco is heavily involved in high school field lighting and has done 80-90 percent of the field lighting in the state. The new lighting would come with a 25 year guarantee. That means no maintenance costs for over 25 years for the school district.

The new lighting would be a four-pole system with a prestressed concrete base and galvanized steel poles. The Musco Light Structure Green System offers many advantages. It would provide three times the light on the field while reducing utility usage by 40 percent, it would eliminate 90 percent of unwanted glare light and provide smooth and uniform field lighting.

The 25-year warranty on parts, labor and lamps provides the school district with no maintenance costs for over 25 years. The estimated cost of the system is $113,000. There are a number of football fields in the area that already have the Musco Green System. Rochester University Center, Winona High School, Southland High School and Pine Island High School all have the system in use.

The Three River Conference and the HVL will vote this week on changes to conference football competition. The conferences are looking at splitting into three different divisions for football. There would be a large school division, medium size school division and a division for the smaller schools. The large schools and middle school divisions would each have eight teams and the small schools would have nine. The idea behind the changes is to improve competitiveness and safety. Currently you have 3A schools playing 1A schools; this represents a significant size different in the schools enrollment. The change if approved would go into effect for the 2013-2014 school year. Initially the change would be just for football

The General Fund balance for the Dover-Eyota School District is estimated to be a strong fund balance. It is the third best in the last 12 years. “We can continue to offer the programs we have now and add some if we need to,” said School District Superintendent Bruce Klaehn. “We are good for the next two years.”

The school board approved the General Fund Staffing changes for 2012-2013. “We are proud of what we are putting before you,” Klaehn told the board. The net budget impact from 2011-2012 to 2012-2013 is an increase of $4,538. The Long Range Capital Expenditures were approved by the school board to allow Superintendent Klaehn to move forward with receiving bids. The School Board will review the Capital Expenditure Considerations again at the May meeting. One capital expenditure is the Dover Elementary School roof; the roof has had leaks. It is currently being evaluated. When the results of the evaluation and cost of repair are decided then the school board will have bids on the other projects and be able to make a decision on projects that will be completed. “Hopefully everything is in place by next month,” said Klaehn. “It’s a time period to get bids on lights; we can reject the bid or move forward.”

The one-on-one lap top program will be expanded to the ninth grade. As teachers aggressively embrace technology in the class room there is a need to have computers available for some ninth grade classes. The district will have a check out procedure and training processes for students. The district will add a keyboarding class for students. As students are using keyboards more and more, the district feels it is important to train them so they are proficient in keyboard usage.

The board approved a request from the baseball team to sell Kwik Trip Cash Cards as a fundraiser. The also approved the Senior Boat Cruise on the La Crosse Queen on Friday, May 25. Next month the board will meet with the student council at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 14 before the regular council meeting.

The auditing contract from CliftonLarsonAllen was approved by the board. According to the document, the objective of the audit is to evaluate whether the basic financial statements are fairly presented in conformity with the U.S. generally accepted accounting principles and to report on the fairness of the supplementary information when considered in relation to the financial statements as a whole. They will also report on internal controls related to financial statements and compliance with laws, regulations and grant agreements.

The period for filing affidavits for candidacy for the office of school board member for Independent School District No. 533 is set for Tuesday, May 22, 2012, and will close at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2012. The affidavit of candidacy must be filed in the office of the school district clerk and the two dollar filing fee paid by June 5.

Superintendent Klaehn and the board discussed the evaluations that were completed by board members. The evaluations included successes and things that may need to be improved upon going forward. “It’s a good process, healthy discussion,” Klaehn said. “We work together well and want to keep working together well.”

Four students and Science teacher Kelly Schuette were at the board meeting for a demonstration and to talk about their College in the Schools Anatomy & Physiology course through the University of Minnesota. The students demonstrated a grant funded project that displayed the “The Western Diet” and its effects on the heart and cardiovascular system.
