Southeast Service Cooperative (SSC) will offer Goldilocks and the Gifted Child: Parents Who
Parent Too Much, Not Enough, or Just the Right Amount on Wednesday, May 9, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM at SSC’s Wood Lake Meeting Center, 210 Wood Lake Drive SE, Rochester. This session, presented by Gifted and Talented Education Consultant Nancy Arey Cohen, will explore both the positive and negative short-term and long-term psychological effects of over-parenting, underparenting, and parenting “just the right amount,” if there is such a thing. This session will be highly interactive, allowing time for attendees to discuss issues of concern and share tips with the presenter and each other.
Nancy Arey Cohen is a lifelong advocate for gifted children. As the proud (but not hovering) parent of two adult gifted sons, she spent many years advocating in schools in Massachusetts, Texas, and Minnesota for the needs of gifted children, providing hundreds of hours of enrichment opportunities, and counseling parents on ways to work collaboratively with teachers. Currently, Nancy serves on the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) Parent Advisory Committee, as well as the Communications Committee of the NAGC Research and Evaluation Network. She is Editor of the Parent and Community Network newsletter, is serving as Parent Day Program Chair for the NAGC 2012 convention, and is Chair-Elect of the Parent and Community Network. She has presented on parenting topics and issues of twice exceptionality on the local, state, and national level.
This session is geared to parents of gifted children, classroom teachers and principals. More information and registration details can be found at www.ssc.coop or by contacting Nicole
LaChapelle at (507) 281-6674 or nlachapelle@ssc.coop. The session costs $10.
Southeast Service Cooperative, ISD #921, has operated since 1976 under Minnesota School Law 123A.21. It is a public, non-profit cooperative of over 70 schools, local government, and nonprofits to maximize resources and increase value through collaboration.
