The Byron City Council took steps to aid in the planning of the 2012 Byron Good Neighbor Days at their meeting on Wednesday night, March 28.

The council thanked Boynton’s Insurance Brokers of Minnesota (also known as Boyton’s Financial Services, Inc.) for their $1,000 donation to the fireworks display at the Good Neighbor Days event. “Thank you Lynn for contributing to a great event,” Mayor Ann Diercks said.

The council also approved a parade permit for Good Neighbor Days to be held on July 20. The paraded will be conducted along Fourth Street NW from the Byron City limits to the primary school on Fourth Street NE. The parade will be conducted between 6 and 9 p.m.

The council approved a one-day temporary dance license to John Bendix of the Byron Fire Relief Association. The dance will be held in the Byron Fire Hall parking lot on Saturday, July 21 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The conditions of the permit set by the council requires the proper number of law enforcement officers present in accordance with Olmsted County law enforcement.

In other action, the council accepted the resignation of Phil Lermon from the Park Board. “I have enjoyed by time with this board and can count the Community Gardens as a goal achieved,” Lermon said.

“He was very effective and made a great contribution to the city,” Mayor Diercks said.

The council also approved the 2012/13 and 2013/14 Byron volunteer First Responder’s contribution agreement with Kalmar Township.

The council approved the change of meeting night from Wednesday to Thursday beginning in June through the month of September.

The council also approved the implementation of a step increase to the stipend for Byron’s elected officials. The quarterly increase for 2013 will be $100. It will also be increased $100 quarterly in 2014.

The last time that the Byron City council increased the stipend for elected officials was 2001. Minnesota Statutes requires governing bodies/ salaries to be set by ordinance and that no change in salary shall take effect until after the next succeeding municipal election. The law also requires that the action be taken prior to the General Election on November 2.

The next Byron City Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 11 at 6 p.m. in City Hall.
