ROCHESTER, Minnesota. -- Local author Jody Brown will launch her debut novel Upside Down Kingdom at Söntés Restaurant and Wine Bar on April 19 at 7 p.m. The cocktail party is open to the public and will feature a chance to meet the author and get a book signed.
“This is a very exciting event for Söntés,” says Tessa Leung, Söntés Restaurant and Wine Bar proprietor. “Jody has been a member of the Söntés serving staff for nearly three years, and we’re just thrilled for her.”
Indeed, Rochester’s newest published author has been waiting tables for years. Brown has waited tables in five different states and drew on this experience to write her novel. Written in Rochester, Upside Down Kingdom takes place in Washington, D.C., where Brown lived for five years before moving to Minnesota. The story centers around a wry-humored young professional named Amy, who is working her first job out of college and moonlighting at a trendy restaurant. With Washington, D.C.’s pulsing backdrop of chaotic and tragic events between the years 2000–2002, Amy’s orderly world is turned upside down.
Jody Brown has a B.A. in Poetry Writing from the University of Pittsburgh, and has made Rochester her home for nearly ten years. Other Rochester contributors in the production of this novel are Dawn Sanborn Photography, which shot the photographs for the book’s cover, and the book’s cover model Keeley Hruska. Carson Framing of Broadway is framing the publicity poster for the book, which will be displayed at Söntés Restaurant and also at the Barn Bar at the Sanborn Sanctuary Farm.
The book will be available for purchase at the launch, and will continue to be for sale—and the author available for signatures—at Söntés Restaurant and Wine Bar. Upside Down Kingdom is also available at Barnes and Noble at Apache Mall and the Barn Bar in Rochester. The book, in both hard copy and e-book format, is available online at BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com.
“It goes to show that you just never know the talents behind the person waiting on you and what great accomplishments he or she has,” says Leung.
