Mayor Wes Bussell proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Eyota to coincide with the National Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is a time for all of us to recognize that we can play a part in promoting the social and emotional well-being of children and families in our communities. Preventing child mistreatment and promoting child well-being is the goal of the proclamation.
The Eyota City Council gave full support to the new summer recreation director, Mark Winkel. Winkel presented a plan for the summer recreation program based on results of last winter’s citizen survey. Registration for the summer programs is scheduled at the Eyota City Hall on Saturday, April 14 from 8:00 a.m. to noon and Tuesday, April 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Each individual program offered is dependent on having enough participants to run the programs. Wednesday nights will be Family Fun Night with a different activity each Wednesday. There are some changes being considered to control costs and improve efficiencies. For example, the swim bus will leave for the St. Charles Aquatic Center every Thursday at 12:30 p.m. from Westside Park instead of 12:15 p.m. that was the time in 2011. The cost of the bus will be $5.00 and include transportation to and from the pool and admission to the pool. This is up from $4.00 last year.
Brad Boice, the lead person in the Public Works Department, requested authorization to approve up to $40,000 for sealcoat maintenance of roads for 2012. There is another $5,000 in the budget for filling cracks in the roads before the sealcoat project. The council approved Boice to use all of the $45,000 for the 2012 Sealcoat and Crack Fill Project. They didn’t limit Boice to the $45,000 if he felt it necessary to exceed the budget to complete the project. The roads have been analyzed and areas selected for the maintenance project. Sealcoating is usually carried out every two years to be able to tie the project together with another city and save money.
The Eyota City Council also re-established the voting precinct and polling place as required by the State of Minnesota because the state has been redistricted. Precinct name is the City of Eyota and the polling place is Dover-Eyota High School.
The Eyota City Council approved a council work meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 29 at 7:00 P.M. The storm sewer improvement project on South Avenue and options to purchase land for future storm water improvement projects are on the agenda.
