Ennis “Delon” Ackerman, 93, a long-time Stewartviille area farmer, died Thursday (July 14, 2011) of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center where he had been a resident for the past two years.
Mr. Ackerman was born Aug. 12, 1917, at Standing Rock Reservation in Selfridge,N.D. to Ennis and Harriet(Hickel) Ackerman. He was born in an adobe hut with a dirt floor and moved with his parents as a boy to Minnesota, where he attended Stewartville H.S. He farmed prior to his marriage on July 28, 1942, to Dolores E. Bernard at her family’s farm in rural Chatfield,MN. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Stewartville all their married lives. Mr. Ackerman was also employed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester until his retirement in 1982. Mrs. Ackerman died on June 16, 1986, and Mr. Ackerman continued to make his home in Stewartville. He enjoyed raising and selling cattle, mowing on his riding lawnmower, and being outside.
Surviors include his sister Betty Anderson of Ft. Bragg, CA, and sister-in-law Doris Ackerman of Tuscon, AZ. He was preceded in death by his wife Dolores, his parents, and two brothers, Clyde and Garnes Ackerman.
The memorial service for Mr. Ackerman was Saturday July 23, 2011 at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville with Rev. Curly Werth officiating. Burial was in the Orion Cemetery in Cummingsville, rural Chatfield, MN.
