Altie R. Schaefer, 98, a longtime Stewartville resident died Monday, April 9, 2012, of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center.
Altie Rocile Stageberg was born July 14, 1913, in Floodwood, Fine Lakes Twsp, St. Louis County, MN to Nels and Nettie (Johnson) Stageberg. She grew up on the family farm and sawmill operation, attended rural schools, Floodwood schools and graduated from Floodwood H.S. in 1931. She then attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis for one year before attending Duluth State Teacher’s College where she received her Teacher’s Certificate. She taught elementary school for two years in the Garvin and Milan, MN school districts. Altie was married on September 11, 1936 in Sisseton, SD to Harold H. Schaefer. Following their marriage the couple lived in Montevedio, MN where Mr. Schaefer was employed as a junior high school principal. They then moved and lived in Wood Lake, MN and Okabena, MN before moving to Stewartville in 1949 where Mr. Schaefer was employed as Superintendent of Schools, retiring in 1976. Mrs. Schaefer was a homemaker and following her husband’s death on March 18, 2003, continued to make Stewartville her home. She was a longtime member of the Stewartville United Methodist Church and was active in it’s Ladies Circles. She was a member of the Monday Study Club for many years and was a past board member at the Stewartville Public Library. She was an avid reader.
Survivors include her two sons Paul of Sunnyvale, CA and Kenneth of Philadelphia, PA; two grandaughters; and two great-grandaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her parents, one sister and three brothers.
The memorial service for Altie was Saturday, April 14, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Stewartville, MN with Rev. Wane Souhrada officiating. Burial will take place at Blue Earth Cemetery in Blue Earth, MN at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the Al Heitman Scholarship Fund.
