The Stewartville School Board approved a reduced preliminary 2012 levy at their meeting on Monday, September 26.

The 2011 levy was $3,635,633.79. The board approved a preliminary 2012 levy of $3,550,562.02, which is a 2.06 percent reduction compared to the 2011 levy.

“Good news, our levy will go down,” Dr. David Thompson, District Superintendent, said. “The problem is even though we are reducing the levy, some Stewartville taxpayers will see a raise in their property taxes because the state is taking away the market value homestead credit.”

The board had to certify the 2012 levy by the end of September to send the information to the county auditor so that tax statements can be prepared. A final levy will be approved in December.

The board also heard presentations from high school students Katelyn Hanf and Jason Robey about their Mayo Clinic summer mentorship experience. Sheila McNeill, Stewartville Schools Curriculum Director, said that last year they placed one student in this program. This year Stewartville had three students participating.

“It gives our students a chance to explore career and college opportunities,” McNeill said. “They really take the students under their wings and treat them like junior employees. It helps them decide what their area of strength is and to understand the importance of research in the medical field.”

Hanf presented her mentorship under the title, “Localization of Apoptosis in Cisplatin Treated Drosophila Brains.” She explained to the board that apoptosis is telling cells to die. Cisplatin is used as a first-line treatment for ovarian cancer; it kills rapidly growing cells by binding their DNA.

“The drosophila is a fruit fly,” Hanf said. “They were treated with the cisplatin and then we dissected them to study the effect on their brains. It takes a lot of practice to dissect a fly under a microscope. One day, I dissected 200 flies.”

Board members asked her what classes at Stewartville prepared her for her mentorship. “Tenth grade biology was helpful,” she said. “When I saw the microscope I would be working with, I thought, ‘I know what to do, I have worked with this before.’”

Robey presented his mentorship experience of biomedical imaging research. He worked with Dr. Richard Robb and Dr. Christian Linte at the Mayo Clinic. His research focused was on the us .....
