Web resource prompts emergency prep through simple tasks

Through the connective portals in our increasingly interconnected world, the people of southeast Minnesota can tune in to broadcasts of natural disasters, violence, and destruction or failure of infrastructure. The images are there every day. It can begin to seem as though emergency situations only occur hundreds or thousands of miles away.

“One of the biggest obstacles we face is that people think it will never happen to them,” said Ken Jones, Rochester Deputy Emergency Management Director.

After coming to Rochester two years ago, Jones took a look around at what the city was doing to prepare citizens to cope with the worst of situations.

Not finding a consistent, coordinated program, Jones suggested that Rochester embrace “Do 1 Thing” (www.do1thing.com).

With a core program consisting of receiving a monthly email for one year - each containing a menu of simple activities that can be done to increase emergency preparedness in a specific area and asking the participant to choose one to accomplish – the program is hardly rigorous. It is precisely this simplicity that makes the program successful, said Jones, who helped to develop “do 1 thing” in partnership with the aid of dozens of organizations while working in emergency management in Lansing, Michigan.

“It’s about small steps and breaking it up,” said Jones, noting that more intense training often lends diminishing returns as minds close up shop when confronted with too much information.

The program was recently recognized by the Center for Disease Control Foundation, as a program among the seven most effective programs in the country in promoting a “whole community approach to emergency management.”

“We’ve found that when an emergency hits, people are prepared,” said Jones. “They might not even know that they are prepared. It’s not like you get a badge at the end, but you have taken simple, manageable steps to become prepared for the situation.”

Some of these steps might include something as simple as purchasing a gallon of water to be stored in the basement, or talking with your neighbors before you go on vacation to make sure they have your contact information should an emergency arise in your home while you are gone.

“The reality is that too many people are not prepared for emergency situations, some might not be aware, some migh .....
