Two Jefferson Elementary School fifth graders won the regional Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) ExploraVision competition for their vision of a treatment for autism. Hemanth Asirathan and Joy Jasik won the competition for students in their age division for the Midwest and Canada region.
Their concept focused on aiding people with autism. The idea is called “Smart Feet.” It uses a shoe to house a tiny computer that sends a wireless transmission to the brain to correct abnormal brain functions. The goal is to improve the lives of autistic children by helping their nerve cells connect and organize, allowing the children to function more like their non-autistic peers. Their project was one of 24 regional finalists. Both students received a Toshiba Camcorder to help them complete the next phase of the project which includes a video and prototype. The school receives a laptop to develop a website that explains the project.
“This project is unbelievable for fifth graders,” said Tom Scanlon, regional representative for Toshiba from Woodbury, Minnesota, the sponsor for the competition. “The sky is the limit,” said Vandi King, the coach for the project. King is the gifted education teacher for Jefferson, Longfellow, Lincoln and Riverside Elementary Schools in Rochester. “The idea is to get kids to think of something and solve it,’ King said. The “Smart Feet” idea came about because Hemanth was reading about the brain. “I was researching about the brain and thought why not help these people,” said Hemanth. “ Because our school has kids with autism I know more about it.” Jefferson staff work with special needs kids. Because of that, children in the school come in contact with autistic children and tend to know more about it.
“He is always thinking outside the box,” said Hemanth’s mother, Usha Agirvatham. “When we say it can’t be done, he says why can’t we do this.” Hemanth likes to play Lego’s and he is a Trekkie (A big fan of Star Wars) in his spare time. Joy likes to dance and is currently taking classes in ballet and hip hop. “She is very creative and has a heart for disadvantaged kids,” said Amy Jasik, Joy’s mother. “They worked very hard.”
The program is funded by Toshiba Corporation, The Toshiba America Companies, Toshiba of Canada Ltd., and the Toshiba America Foundation and is administered by the National Science Teachers Associat .....
