{ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA} – ROCHESTER CATHOLIC SCHOOLS (RCS), Christine Farnberg, a sixth grader at Holy Spirit Catholic School, is the Southeast Minnesota Spelling Bee champion and is leaving to advance in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee Championship on May 28 in Washington, D.C.
Christine will compete against 281 spellers from the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Europe; as well as the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan and South Korea. The spellers range in age from 8 to 14 years old, but 89% are between the ages of 12 and 14 years old.
Each speller will participate in 3 different preliminary rounds and 2 semifinal rounds until the finalists advance to the championship match on Thursday, May 30, from 8:00-10:00 p.m. EDT. The competition will be broadcasted live throughout the week on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3. Please visit www.spellingbee.com/about-bee-week for a detailed schedule.
Christine is speller # 132 and leaves for the competition this Sunday with her family. Friday after the championship round, all spellers are given a tour of Washington D.C. There will be an awards banquet for the spellers and their families following the tour.
Holy Spirit Catholic School will host a “send-off” event to wish her well. The event is scheduled for Friday, May 24 at 3:20pm. Christine and her family will drive down 50th Avenue while students and staff line the sidewalk to congratulate her.
Tina was one of 12 spellers, six from each regional spelling bee, to compete in the Final Spelling Bee at the Southeast Service Cooperative in Rochester. Tina won the championship after correctly spelling the word "innocuous."
The Southeast Service Cooperative funded an all-expense paid trip for Christine and one adult. She also won a $100 savings bond, Valerie's Spelling Bee Supplement Booklet Third New International Dictionary and a one-year subscription to Britannica Online Student Edition.
