Spring is here and the days are getting longer and the temps are rising. For some, that means cleaning up the lawn they never got around to, or in the case of Roy Larson, Borrow-A-Bike coordinator, that means gearing up for this years Borrow-A-Bike program in Pine Island.
The program started three year’s ago and the number of bikes has grown to more than 70 for use on the main floor of the bike shop.
Larson, an obvious outdoor enthusiast, encourages everyone to use the program and said, “Promoting the outdoors and exercising is the main goal of Borrow-A-Bike.”
With increased numbers from two years ago, more than 140 people used the service last season, Larson said. People from all over the country and world have borrowed a bike with many coming from Minneapolis and others from both coasts of the United States. Locals and patients from the Mayo Clinic are also frequent patrons of the service provided. 12.5 miles separate Pine Island from Rochester via the Douglas trail and the trip, can easily be done in a morning or if you’re so inclined a full day.
The ride consists of outstanding Minnesota scenery including views of the Zumbro river and rolling hills of Minnesota farmland. Several stops offer shelters, tables, restrooms and benches along the way. Starting in May, the program lasts until October, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and weekdays by appointment.
The program is free and all one needs is a signed waiver and helmet. Children are welcome to borrow a bike but need a form signed by a parent or guardian.
