Pine Island’s exiled flowerpots to bloom again

Consider Pine Island’s flowerpots dilemma solved for the season. Resolution was reached at the March 19 city council meeting.

At last November’s meeting, the council voted to banish the 19 giant flowerpots from their Main Street habitat. The planters, installed as traffic control devices to enhance pedestrian safety, were instead hazards that blocked the views of walkers and drivers.

At its February meeting, the council mulled the pots’ fate. Councilman Nick Novak suggested selling them; others said the city should keep them, just not on Main Street.

Finally, Mayor Rod Steele assigned Steve Oelkers of the Public Works Department the triple task of (1) finding possible new spots for the flowerpots, (2) calculating the cost of maintaining them and (3) reporting back to the council in March.

And so Oelkers presented his Flowerpot cost analysis for 2013. The concise and thorough review concluded that the price of 76 plants (four per planter) and watering them (an hour a day for 100 days) would total $1,504.

Regarding rehoming of the pots, two could be located at the swimming pool, one at the tennis court, three at the Senior Center and two at the History Center. “The balance (11),” Oelker’s report said, “will be placed in the parks and near the creamery and butter factory.”

“It’s a beautification project,” Councilman Jerry Vettel said.

But what if, said someone in the crowd, money runs out before the growing season ends? “If you can’t water the flowers and they die, it becomes a non-beautification project.”

“If that happens, I will water them,” Vettel promised.

With that assurance, the council authorized the expenditure, 4-1. Novak dissented.
