Oronoco City Council met March 19 on another cold and wintry day. Despite the weather, council members prepared for a number of spring and summer events.
Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days is scheduled for August 16-18. The event committee has been preparing for the event by looking into purchasing new advertisement banners. Mayor Kevin McDermott explained, “We usually put banners up on July 4 through Gold Rush and give businesses an advertisement at the bottom.” New banners will cost around $135.
Parks & Trails discussed the creation of the Oronoco community gardens. “We’re thinking of setting this up not this coming year but the following,” said Councilor Trish Shields, “We want to come up with a list of priorities.” Councilor Jayne Krause approved the idea.
Oronoco City Council also addressed summer and spring complications. Fire Chief Dan Sundt mentioned that his team of volunteers would receive storm watch training on April 1. Afterword, Mayor McDermott expressed a need for more sandbags useful for fighting floods. “I’d like to make a motion to have a load of sand dropped off,” he said, “I’d rather have it sooner than later.”
Councilors moved forward in discussing County road changes on MN Ave, City Road 12 and County 118 from last month. Mayor McDermott ensured that he would be contacting Olmsted County officials to request the construction schedule.
Community members were interested in establishing a biking lane along MN Avenue. Civil Engineer Joe Palen said the city would have to help pay: “Based upon my understanding, we were going to receive an estimate of cost.”
For Water & Sewer, Palen also took some time to explain the Community Assessment Report (CAR), which assessed existing sewer conditions for Oronoco. “In conclusion,” Palen said, “we have a lot of failing systems. About 60 percent without taking in set back requirements or the lifespan of facilities.” The solution would cost around 2.2 million dollars. Councilor Skyler Breitenstein motioned to discuss this issue in July. The motion carried.
