Dover City Council supports government aid increase

The Dover City Council voted to support the bill that would increase local government aid (LGA). Dover has received $96,364 in 2008, $98,558 in 2009, $96,418 in 2010 and $93,649 in 2011 and 2012. The bill by state representative Ben Lien of Moorhead would add $80 million to the $426 million the state is scheduled to spend in 2014. In 2008 the state spent approximately $430 million on LGA, in 2009 that increased to $481 million and in 2011 that decreased to $425 million.
LGA is intended to help cities with greater needs than they can reasonably expect to fund with property taxes. “In our case we have approximately $150,000 in property taxes and government aid is another $96,000,” said Mayor Roger Ihrke. “It is an important part.”
Like many cities, Dover uses the money like it uses the general fund to provide city services. The City of Dover once again will provide funds for a summer rec program.
Dover’s program was started five years ago by Michelle Omundson. She has run the program each year since. The program was started because of a lack of transportation and a timing problem to get kids to Eyota to be part of that program. Dover does pay Eyota an annual fee for those kids who choose to be part of the Eyota program.
The council set July 3 for their annual fireworks celebration. Ihrke said it is good for the community. “We don’t compete with other cities,” said Ihrke. “And people usually have the 4th off work.”
