Paul Melby of Byron was awarded Runner of the Year at the annual banquet for the Rochester Track Club (RTC) on Saturday, January 28. This year’s award was special, the ceremony more poignant and emotional. The winner, 35, a beloved leader in his running community, suddenly collapsed and died as he finished the Lake Wobegon Marathon with a Boston qualifying time of 3:14:39 on May 14, 2011.
The grief at the loss of this fine man is still palpable in the Rochester and Byron running communities. Brooklawn Park in Byron has been adopted by his running team, Team R.E.D. and a plaque in the park bears his name in dedication. A wall in the Bear’s Den, where Team R.E.D. regularly socializes after runs, displays a photo collage of Paul. Local running blogs and newsletters yet pay homage to Paul’s impact on the community—they profess his ebullient spirit, the unpredictable fun and craziness he brought everywhere he went, his unparalleled work ethic in athletic training and at the engineering bench, and his unfailing commitment to family, his wife Shelly and their three children, Anna, Madison, and Carson.
“His dedication to running was impressive,” says his wife Shelly Melby. “The commitment and all of that which running demands is hard work. Whatever he was involved in, he did the best that he could, all the time. I think he’d be pretty proud of this award.”
Melby’s close friend and 2010 recipient of the RTC Runner of the Year award, Tom O’Leary of Byron presented the award at the Clarion Hotel banquet. In his remarks, O’Leary said:
“Runner of the Year is awarded to someone who achieved a significant running accomplishment, and one who is an inspiration in the local running community. This year’s winner achieved all this and much more.
“He embodied the art of being driven, without losing sight of the fact that ‘it’s just a race.’ From day one, he got it. That we, as runners, are lucky. We get to run together, we get to learn from and about each other.”
Jim Mason, President of the Rochester Track Club, said that there were several nominations for 2011 Runner of the Year, but the Board unanimously agreed that Paul Melby surpassed them all. It was a “no-brainer” that Melby was most deserving. Paul Melby’s natural leadership style and energy applied to the Rochester and Byron running communities was contagious.
