A life lost too early: Byron High community plants tree

A purple flowering crabapple tree was planted at Byron High School in memoriam of the beloved senior student, Deianerah Jean Logan, “DJ,” on Friday, April 26. DJ died in a car accident on the first day of her senior year, distracted by a text message while driving. Members of the Logan family wore t-shirts with the message: “No Text Is That Important.”
Student organizers from the Byron High Student Council and National Honor Society collaborated with Dan and Tammy Buchanan from the The Mosquito Squad of SE Minnesota to create a stone marker, donated by Anderson Memorial Granite, which read “It’s Not Goodbye, It’s See Ya Later,” encircled in a heart.
The crowd around the crabapple tree, donated by Sargent’s Nursery of Rochester, wore purple. A classmate and friend of DJ read a dedication explaining that the crabapple tree was chosen because it flowered in a shade of purple, which was DJ’s favorite color. “Purple fit her bright personality and smile,” she said. “The tree comes from a small seed, and in a sense, Deianerah Jean Logan placed a seed in all of our hearts, too.”
Students stood with their arms around one another as, one by one, each took their turn scooping soil around the roots of the memorial tree. Seniors wore purple shirts inscribed with “Deej, Always remembered, Never Forgotten, Forever in Our Hearts.” It seemed near everyone in the community had come around the Logan family, banding together to help heal. While the tragedy of a life lost too early necessarily brings a season of night, the warm wind and light on the first radiant, sun-beaming afternoon in April seemed to mark a lifting of darkness.
DJ’s father thanked the mass of people surrounding his family in support, “We are very blessed by this community. You each have touched our lives—that’s why we can get through this and smile like Deej would want us to.”
