Mayor Ann Diercks proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month at the Byron City Council meeting on Wednesday night, March 14.
In the proclamation, Mayor Diercks called upon all citizens, community groups, religious organizations, medical facilities and businesses to increase their participation in efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect, thereby strengthening the community. Carma Bjournson, Voices for Children – Child Abuse Prevention Council of Olmsted County, was on hand with a group of young volunteers to give each council member a blue ribbon to wear as a reminder.
“We invite you to help us by being advocates to the community about child abuse prevention,” Bjornson said. “They are a special gift that we have.” Bjornson reminded council members that there are brown bag lunch seminars each Monday in April on the Child Advocacy Center, childhood depression, dating violence and Mission 21 – human trafficking. For more information, call 507-287-2020, extension 1321.
The council approved a street sweeping policy for the city. The City of Byron has to do routine street sweeping every year in the spring and the fall. Up until now, they did not have a documented policy for the process. Spring sweeping will occur in late March or early April, after the risk of later snowfall has passed.
Fall sweeping will begin in October and typically be completed by November. The city has classified city streets based on the street function, traffic volume, impact on water quality and the environment, and the importance of the welfare of the community. The city staff has designed sweeping routes to provide the maximum possible benefit to higher volume and water-quality sensitive areas.
The council approved a resolution establishing the Byron precinct and polling place. The city had received notification from the Office of Secretary of State regarding the redistricting of precincts. By Minnesota Statute 204B.13, Subdivision 3(d), all precincts must be reestablished by April 3. The precinct name will be City of Byron, City Limits. The polling place will be the Byron City Hall, 680 Main Court NE.
The next Byron City Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 28 at 6 p.m. in City Hall.
