Law Enforcement Memorial Day - Police Week Observance

Mon, May 13th, 2013
Posted in Government

The Law Enforcement Memorial Association (LEMA) announces the annual Standing of the Memorial Guard. It will commence on May 14, 2013 at 1900 hours when officers from all over Minnesota travel to St. Paul to the State Police Memorial where they stand in silent vigil for 20 minutes shifts. This is to keep alive the memories of the 270 fallen law enforcement officer in Minnesota who have lost their lives while protecting their communities. This vigil will continue throughout the night and until the following day when the officer will complete the standing guard at 7:00pm.

This is a day we honor law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty in Minnesota and nationwide. Following the Standing of the Memorial Guard, the Law Enforcement Memorial Association will host a Candlelight Service which will be held at the Peace Officers Memorial on the Minnesota State Capitol grounds. The general public is invited to attend this moving celebration where tribute is paid to all 270 officers through a combination of police bagpipe music, vocal solos and full music compositions. This year’s guest speaker is Minneapolis Chief of Police Janee Harteau. The ceremony will be begin at 7:25pm on Wednesday with a parade of law enforcement honor guards who will march to the Capital grounds from Wabasha and Exchange. The event concludes with a ceremonial firing party, taps and final musical selections which will include the Minnesota Police Band playing Amazing Grace.

Please contact LEMA Board Member Jeff Beahen at jbeahen@ci.rogers.mn.us or 762-228-4930 for further details.
