Senator Nelson Comments on Destination Medical Center and Omnibus Tax Bill

(St. Paul, MN) - I stand here tonight humbled by the role of being a Senator – elections have consequences and our votes have deep meaning.
It is truly an honor to serve in this Minnesota Legislature to represent the residents of District 26. They are a diverse people – farmers, teachers, business owners, entrepreneurs, nurses and some of the most brilliant researchers and healers in our nation. This diversity of thinking requires me to evaluate each issue and to do an analysis of how each issue affects my constituents and the entire state.
I rely on my core beliefs about good government. These principles help guide my decision-making, especially when very tough decisions must be made.
Tonight, I am divided – I am divided because of the choice before us. I am faced with two equally tough choices. I support DMC unequivocally while I oppose this tax bill with equal force of opinion.
I have co-sponsored and supported the Destination Medical Center both at home and in St. Paul. I salute my colleagues for doing what some said was impossible – DMC has come this far and it will pass tonight as part of this lynchpin tax bill.
The DMC will make a huge difference for our state and for science, and for the health care of untold millions of people. Mayo is a treasure and this legislature has recognized that and I salute my colleagues, particularly my dear friend, Dave Senjem, and the conferees for that recognition and their deliberate action.
I regret however that this jewel, the Destination Medical Center has been wrapped in an onerous tax bill. On balance this bill is counterproductive to economic growth and to prosperity for this state. It will touch every element of what I believe is essential for a growing and prosperous Minnesota.
This bill will make it harder to retain our jobs and to attract new ones.
I cannot and I will not go home to my district and report that I supported over $2 billion in permanent tax increases. This level of taxation sets a new baseline in this state – one that will be hard to turn back – I deeply regret that this legislature has deemed it necessary to add over $2 billion in tax increases, growing government by adding on new programs rather than modifying or improving what isn’t working.
I am pained by this choice. I .....
