Rochester Montessori Middle School-run chicken business takes flight

These kids have gone leagues beyond the lemonade stand. Young entrepreneurs at Rochester Montessori School (RMS) have a business plan for a Community Supported Agricultural (CSA) program as part of their Erdkinder (which literally means “children of the Earth”) curriculum. Dr. Maria Montessori believed that Environmental Education was imperative to the adolescent experience. Middle school teacher Emily Lewis described the Montessori philosophy as education through “hands-on, meaningful work that is directly related to something that students can see and interact with for a long period of time.”
The CSA project is called The Circle of Life Gardens. Guided by Outdoor Environment Specialist, Ethan Lewis, in the fall and spring of the 2011-2012 school year, students visited the Cedar Valley Farm outside of Lanesboro. In the winter, they toured two urban chicken coops in Rochester. The students learned about the logistics of building and maintaining a chicken coop and vegetable garden. The activities on research field trips and in preparation for the garden and chicken coop are integrated into their language arts, science, social studies and math classes.
In February, thanks to the behind the scenes efforts of Ethan Lewis, RMS was awarded grant monies from “Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom” for their chicken coop and run. Rochester’s Kruse Lumber also generously contributed to construction materials.
Before their vision could become a reality, it would be necessary to change Rochester City Ordinance 113A that only allowed three hens. Counseled that three hens “wasn’t a good business model,” Ethan Lewis and the students began a variance process to request permission for twelve hens.
“First, we composed and hand-delivered a letter to all of our school’s neighbors, which is everyone whose property is directly adjoining the school, asking for their permission for an increase in the number of hens and a larger coop.
“Having gained the support of the majority of our neighbors, we applied for a variance with the Rochester City Council, and provided them all of the original letters received back from RMS’ neighbors,” said Emily Lewis, middle school teacher.
At the City Council meeting in February, RMS presented their case for more chickens, and requested an amendment to the ordinance. The council voted 7-0 in favor of the amendment. Now any educat .....
